Prof. Dickson's book is an excellent guide to the CCP: how it started, how it has evolved and shifted over the decades, the impact of the various leaders of China, and so on. The book shows that China isn't a simple top-down dictatorship; there is a complex interplay between government and party officials at the bottom, mid-level, and at the top. There are also regional differences. The CCP has tried experiments in villages, cities, and provinces; some are discarded while others are developed further.The CCP is cautious about change. The Party is well-aware of what happened to the USSR (the US should also study that carefully). It makes changes and adjusts. The author shows many examples of how the Party is responsive (adapting and changing) yet at the same time, the Party is not accountable (it allows no elections or outside restraints on the Party). Prof. Dickson brings up the two concepts (responsive/accountable) as if they are a pair, but it seems to me these aren't necessarily joined. There could be additional concepts to understand China.The book focuses on the broader economic and political powers that shape the CCP's policies, so there's only a bit of personal biography for Mao, Deng, and other leaders to explain their careers. However, I wondered why Xi Jinping has turned out to be so Red and authoritarian. It wasn't obvious in his long earlier career.Prof.'s Dickson's writing style isn't, well, sparkling :-), but it's not boring either. He writes clearly, with careful distinctions and explanations of concepts. He covers the phases of the CCP over the decades, how policy is developed, the various types of non-government groups, what counts for career and success in the Party (and career failure), the ethnic movements, and so on. He also looks at whether China has a civil society and the possibility of democracy, which are questions from a US point of view.It's very useful to realize the complexity of politics and power in China. I'd like to see future books that go further into details about Chinese politics, ideology, power, and economics, plus of course how the CCP and China (not the same thing) see the US, Europe, and so on. Kishore Mabubani's "Has China Won?" is an excellent survey of how the rest of the world (i.e., beyond the US) sees China. In the current atmosphere of American anti-Sino-hysteria on both the left and right, this is a 'balanced' book. The last chapter sums up the case for China becoming more like us ('democratic') and less like us ('authoritarian'), with 'more like us' the obvious 'best case'. To anyone who's actually been recently to Asia this seems like BS. What the book actually demonstrates is the Chinese government is much more responsive to what people living there actually want than our government is (the book shows how they do it), and in that sense more democratic. But you won't know this from the book's mis-use of 'democratic' and 'authoritarian'.
